My Google account was only on its 2nd day and the only activity it had was to create this blog and write a couple of entries. On the day after I created the account I was greeted with this message:
We've detected unusual activity on the account you're trying to access. To continue, please follow the instructions below.
It forced me to either give it a mobile phone for a text or a phone number for a phone call. I chose the latter. The phone number I provided was a "throw-away" phone number because I suspect they are collecting this information.
Furthermore what 'unusual activity' could there be? Creating a blog? Or more specifically, creating a blog that does not agree with Google's liberal bias? Now that is more like it!
Still, this is not as bad as Facebook which will ONLY let you use a mobile phone. You have no other choice there and that is why I quit using Facebook. I do not trust them with my mobile number any more than I trust Google with it.
Nice try Google.
